Identity animation - Progress
How I started
Lauren Gregory
To begin with I started with the idea of doing an easy animation on Procreate, which is the gif above and I started doing little sketches with me in Madeira playing the the magic 8 ball and some witchy things to symbolise my way of escapism. This was because when I was 10 years old I lived in Madeira (Portugal) I couldn’t speak Portuguese well and it was hard in school to make friends, so out of boredom I asked the ball things like “will today be good?” Continuing with it saying yes or no answers and it would give me this sort of placebo effect, and me saying “yes, it will be good!” This links to the idea of decisions make up your identity, bit by bit. In addition, while I was using this supposably ‘magic‘ ball I felt magical because of it while using my imagination and this was the reason behind the witch sketches. Overall I came to the conclusion I wanted to focus on decisions.
I then wanted to focus more on the ball and it’s meaning and not on me, importantly the idea of decisioning making as the core of our identity. So, I stumbled across the idea of animation with oil paint on glass, I did a little research on it and found an artist I wanted to take inspiration from called Lauren Gregory. She specialises with doing oil animations on glass in a more fun and rough way, with vibrant colours and textures for music videos and more. Since I figured out a certain style I started a few quick sketches, which starts off with a person holding the ball and asking it a question, then shaking it, turning it around to reveal its answer and then the ball falls and it’s shown rolling down the two arms which point to two different directions. This represents how our decisions impact our identity, for example taking us either right or left in our lives. The arms represent ourselves and the ball corresponds to decisions, while it can also mean we take chances and risks in life, which all adds up to make our own identity.
